Come Celebrate the Season of Apples at Douglas Orchard & Farm
What makes Douglas Orchard & Farm’s apple orchard special? This is the forth year that the orchard has been owned by the Socrat family. During this time restoration of the orchard has been an ongoing process. We were rewarded last season with the first apples produced since buying the farm. It is Farmer Nick’s priority to deliver the healthiest grown food to the community. That means no spray vegetables, blueberries that have been sprayed only with organic oil pre-bud emersion and yes, minimally sprayed apples. After finding out that most apple orchards spray up to 25 times with restricted pesticides, Farmer Nick said, no way. Here at Douglas Orchard & Farm, the apple orchard has been sprayed 4 times, using integrated pest management practices. Farmer Nick is striving to produce a good enough looking apple with minimal chemical pest control. What does that mean for how they look? The apples may have spots and blemishes. Definitely NOT the perfect apple. What do we say about that? You have an apple kissed by nature with WAY less chemicals but tasting just as good. There was a learning curve last year as the public at first was wondering why our apples looked less than perfect but once educated about our spraying practices, we had a lot more business from people who were trying to put less chemicals in their body. As Farmer Nick says “It’s better to eat nature than chemicals”. You can look forward to hand pressed unpasteurized apple cider too.
Your guess is as good as ours. Enjoy picking mystery apples.
